Eight killed, 24 injured in Sylhet road crash

SYLHET: At least eight people, including two primary school teachers, were killed and 24 others injured when a bus collided head-on with a truck on Sylhet-Tamabil highway near Sarighat of Jaintapur upazila of the district Monday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as-- Tripti Rani Dey, 30, assistant teacher of Kurihai Government Primary School in Guainghat, Babita Rani Das, 24, assistant teacher of Birakhai Government Primary School in Jaintapur upazila, Bus driver Anwar Hossain, 25, Khatun Begum, 50, Numan Ahmed, 10, Salma Begum, 45, and Fatema Begum, 30.

The dead truck driver could not be identified yet.

Confirming the news to The Independent, Kamal Uddin, sub-inspector of Highway police said: “Three persons were killed on spot while another four died on the way to hospital and one died in the hospital. The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, mostly in critical condition.”

All bodies have been sent to the said hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

After the accident, an agitated mob blocked the highway for around two hours.
